The political balancing act Jasmeet Bains has pulled off since winning election to California's 35th Assembly District will be put to a new test in next month鈥檚 primary election as she goes up against an opponent very different from the one she beat in 2022 to become the Legislature's first Sikh American.

Instead of facing a fellow Democrat with superior name recognition, as she did in her 21-percentage-point general election victory against Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez, Bains hopes to defend the seat against a relatively little-known candidate from the Republican Party.
